On one hand the fact that Pink Shirt Day falls on a Wednesday and calls for us all to wear pink is a bit ironic… I mentioned this in the car this morning, stating that the famous line from Mean Girls was On Wednesday’s We Wear Pink. yet Kent’s response was, that’s why it is important for us to wear pink on a Wednesday then. Two sides of the coin, is it a brilliant message or a huge faux pas??? I think I will err on the glass half full side and believe as Kent did that the day was picked particularly for the significance of Pink on Wednesdays. Did you wear PINK? Me any excuse.
So true confession this was totally not the outfit I had planned today, in fact it is not what I had on at 7:30 this morning. It was at that moment that Kent pulled out a pink shirt and said it’s #pinkshirtday. Darn it, I completely zoned out and the blue dress with red stripes was just not going to work. Fast forward the space of five minutes as I tore through my closet to find an outfit in Pink I had not worn lately. Blush was what I settled on and it worked for the day. Actually seemed to work just fine.
So lets examine #pinkshirtday, does that sound familiar at all to you? It’s been ten years. Ten years wow where has the time gone. It all started in Nova Scotia when David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They decided to take a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a fellow student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school.
Discovering that people can make a difference whether you are alone or a pair… two people with a great idea, kind hearts and conviction can change the world.
Mr. Shepherd and a few others set off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled. The bullies were never heard from again.”
Ironically, the pink day is celebrated on many different days, Feb 27/28 in some locations, May 4th in others, some places state the second Tuesday in April, others, well Wednesday anytime just seems to work.
In Canada, Feb. 22 marks Pink Shirt Day across the country. The day falls in line with a month long campaign throughout February aimed at raising awareness around the issue of bullying. Students are encouraged to wear pink shirts and buttons to spread awareness and show that they stand up against bullying in schools, homes, workplaces and online.
In the pink or not, its time we all took a stand. Spread awareness, stand up and please if you see it happen, at home, school or even in the workplace, make it stop.
Hey lets not forget its Thursday and that means….
