Loving Life after 50

Kacaba Winery & Vineyard

I just realized that I stopped my wine tour before I finished introducing you to all of my favourite vineyards, so I thought Saturdays might be a great day to get back to a little Travel, a little Food and a little wine.  Time to re-introduce you to the Niagara Wine Region.(Konzelmann, Hinterbrrok, Lailey, Southbrook, and  Ravine)

Next on my tour was Kacaba pronounced Ka-saw-ba,  for the longest time I thought it was a hard see Ka-Ka-ba, so please show you have done your homework if you visit remember “SAW”.

Kacaba Vineyards Winery is a premium small batch winery located on prime bench land of The Niagara Escarpment in Vineland, Ontario. Smaller batch sizes assure that focus is placed on producing wine of Merit. The Winemaker’s emphasis is placed on creating wines rich in aromas, deep in color and character with velvety finishes. Kacaba wines are produced using only the finest grapes grown on the Kacaba estate or partnered grape growers from surrounding vineyards. All Kacaba Vineyards wines are award winning and sell through quickly.

Trust me these wines are “wines of merit”.  I had tried Kacaba previously ( sampled at an Ontario Wine Show, and picked up a bottle or two at the LCBO) but we have never been to the Vineyard. What an absolute treat.  A quaint vineyard with an interesting story.  The land apparently was slated for sub division hell when Michael Kacaba a Toronto Lawyer originally from Saskatchewan managed to snap up the property/

He immediately set to work in planting the present vineyard and establishing a winery for the first vintage in 1999. The history of the winery has been startling insofar as the wines have consistently gone on to win a substantial number of prestigious awards. The wines have very good recognition and acceptance by customers and restaurants as well as Canadian Embassies and Canadian Parliament. Our wines sell out regularly soon after their release.

They are truly not kidding this bridge really does groan and creek and quite possibly causes a bit of an anxious moment when your vehicle crosses.

The Tasting Room is set in a lovely building surrounded by potted flowers, antiques and charming decor. The care with which the grounds are kept provide an insight into the care that obviously is given to the grapes and subsequently the wine.

We arrived late in the day and thus were not able to sample the delicacies in the bistro, we will be returning for a cozy lunch or afternoon snack.

They have a very tiny tasting room but offer a very unique experience, tasting from the barrel,  I know WTH.  That was one of the most unique experiences I have had at a vineyard, sampling straight from the cask. Plus they allowed us to pre-order, so yummy we ordered the Merlot and the Cabernet Suavignon straight from the barrel. ( It was so worth the wait). One of my regrets is I did not get pictures of our backroom sampling experience ( making me a very bad blogger because seriously isn’t rule number one always camera/phone in hand, I read that on the internet so it must be true right Helene )

The variety and selection of wines is well worth the visit. In the whites we range from the light Pinot Gris, to a full bodied Chardonnay, throw a little Gewurztraminer Icewine and of course my fav the Riesling,  The reds we have the Merlot the Cabs, the Syrahs… Needless to say a full selection including some Reserves and of course a Vintage Selection.

Kacaba also has many events in the actual Cellar, allowing them to expand their room while keeping the tasting bar cozy and intimate. ( I borrowed these photos from their facebook site so I could show you size really doesn’t matter with a fantastic presentation.

If you decide to toud the Niagara Wine Region and I strongly urge you to add this to your must do list,  remember to add Kacaba to the list.
