It started with an email and it culminated in the most awesome shoes imaginable. I never thought when I opened up that email that a love affair would begin. Tis true folks a simple invite to a Grand Opening and I was hooked. ECCO Canada just opened up their 29th Canadian store at the Rideau Centre in Ottawa and I was there.
The President of ECCO Canada Jordon Searle welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of ECCO Shoes and then turned the festivities over to Niels Boel Abrahamsen the Danish Ambassador ( himself in ECCO shoes)
Karl Toosbuy – the founder of ECCO – had a dream. He wanted to own a shoe factory and run his own business. Trained from an early age as a shoemaker, he gradually rose through the ranks and by his early thirties was managing a shoe factory in Copenhagen. The business, however was not his. So he decided to give up the security of a regular job, sell his home and move to Bredebro on the west coast of Denmark, just north of the German border. With his wife Birte and five-year-old daughter, Hanni, he rented a small house and took over an empty factory built by the local community to help create jobs in what was a predominantly agricultural town.
In April 1963, ECCO started out with 16 employees and one market. Today, operating in 50 markets across the world, the global ECCO family comprises 17,000 members. They are a medium-sized family business, proud of their heritage and with a strong platform because their products are relevant in today’s world.
Their employees are the heart of their business. They are aware that without skilled, loyal and hardworking employees, ECCO could not deliver.
Believing in creating a sense of family, a feeling of belonging. They strive to provide lifelong education, good career prospects and interesting challenges in order to maintain a high level of job satisfaction. They never forget they are shoemakers striving to make first-class products.
What an amazing corporate policy, one that I can support and that I also believe in. When I received the invitation I was not familiar with ECCO but I did my research before saying yes. What I discovered was this was a company that I could support and one that I believe Canada and Ottawa is fortunate to have. Its a company that proudly advertises their social responsibility. They believe in the environment and believe that they have a corporate responsibility
. There is no outsourcing, from Cow to consumer they control the process. Plus the ECCO Code of Conduct includes respect for human rights, freedom of religion and supports the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
How can I not get behind this company plus did I mention SHOES.
Such a lovely store and a lovely opening and I need to say it because after looking at all my pictures I think I may have an nnatural fascination with these men’s shoes… they pop up a lot.
I would be remiss if I did not talk about the new ECCO Shape, high heels that feel as great as they look. The heel of the shoe is tapered so that the inner height is not as great as the outer height, inserts in reverse and Oh MY how very comfortable. The Shoes themselves all have a polymer base that allows for flexibility in the step. I apologize I cannot explain this as well as they did last night at the store but I wold encourage yo to check out an ECCO locally and learn all there is to learn. Plus just try on a pair I dare you.. just like Lay’s potato chips you cant stop at just one
It was a grand opening so of course there was food, and oh my what delicacies, from the watermelon and goat cheese to the arctic char cones, from chips to cupcakes and of course a selection of bubbly or sparkling water. It was a wonderful occasion to catch up with old friends, meet some new friends and try on shoes I mean seriously have I mentioned SHOES yet???
The shoe selection for men, women and children covers the range from Dress to casual with a fantastic selection of Golf Shoes thrown in. If you golf you really need to check out the shoes, such an amazing concept. The hybrid is a concept I could really get behind and I just may have fallen in love with a Pink Pair. Kent and I really had a blast meeting people, sampling the apps and of course trying on shoes.
and we may have been sent home with some amazing cupcakes, a new water bottle and luggage tags and we both may have ordered our favorite shoes that we ordered. Cannot wait for them to arrive and to show you what we selected. Thanks to ECCO Canada and Brill Communications for allowing me to be part of this amazing evening.
