How to Create a Candle Napkin Fold: An Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial
Last Updated on 2026-10-03 by Linda
Sometimes the best tablescape inspiration comes when you aren’t even looking for it.
On my last MSC cruise, I spotted this candle-style napkin fold on the table and immediately thought, I need to figure out how to recreate that at home.
Fast-forward to my latest fall tablescape. I was decorating with the collection of brass candlestick holders my mom collected while living in Saudi Arabia, and suddenly I knew exactly which napkin fold I needed.
Candles everywhere—including the napkins.
This candle napkin fold looks impressive standing in the centre of a plate or bowl, but once you understand the folding and rolling technique, it is surprisingly simple.

What You Need to Make a Candle Napkin Fold
You really don’t need anything special for this fold. All you need is a square cloth napkin and a flat surface for folding.
I used my soft pink cloth napkins because they coordinated with the pink candles and pink-and-white tablescape, but this fold would be beautiful in white, cream, red, gold or just about any colour that works with your table.
A napkin with a little structure works particularly well because you want the finished “candle” to stand upright.

How to Fold a Candle Napkin
Step 1: Lay Your Napkin Flat
Start with a square cloth napkin laid completely flat on your work surface.
Smooth it out with your hands so you don’t have any large wrinkles or bunches of fabric.

Step 2: Fold the Napkin Into a Triangle
Take one corner of the napkin and bring it diagonally across to meet the opposite corner.
You should now have one large triangle.
Line up the edges as evenly as you can and smooth the napkin flat.

Step 3: Fold One Corner In
With the triangle in front of you, take one of the outer corners and fold it inward toward the centre.
Don’t fold the entire napkin in half again. You are beginning to narrow the triangle while creating the shape you’ll need for rolling.
Smooth the fold with your hand.

Step 4: Fold the Opposite Side In
Now repeat the process with the opposite side.
Bring that side inward so that you create one long, narrow strip of fabric with pointed ends.
At this stage it should look much less like a triangle and more like an elongated napkin.

Step 5: Fold Up One Point
Take the pointed end at the bottom and fold a small section upward.
This little point is important because it will eventually become the flame of your candle.
You only need to fold enough to create the length of flame you want showing above the finished candle.

Step 6: Turn the Napkin Over and Start the Roll
Turn the napkin over.
Beginning at the end with your folded point, start rolling the napkin tightly toward the opposite end.
Keep the roll fairly snug and even as you work your way across. A tighter roll will help the finished candle hold its shape and stand upright.

Step 7: Continue Rolling
Continue rolling the napkin along its full length.
As you roll, keep the bottom edges relatively even. This will eventually become the base of your candle, so a flatter bottom will make it easier to stand the napkin on the plate.

Step 8: Finish the Roll
When you reach the opposite end, wrap the remaining fabric around the outside of your candle.
Tuck the loose end securely into one of the folds so the roll doesn’t unravel.
When you look down from the top, you’ll see the pretty spiral created by the rolled layers of fabric.

Step 9: Shape Your Candle Flame
Now for the fun part.
Stand your napkin upright and gently pull and shape the small pointed section you created earlier.
Twist or fluff it slightly until it resembles a little candle flame.
You don’t want it to look too perfect. The slightly loose, twisted fabric is actually what gives it that flame-like appearance.

Step 10: Stand Your Candle Napkin on the Table
Give the bottom a little adjustment so your napkin candle stands securely.
That’s it!
You now have a three-dimensional candle napkin that can stand right in the centre of a plate or bowl.

Styling the Candle Napkin Fold
For my pink and brass fall tablescape, I placed one candle napkin upright in each white bowl.
The pink napkins coordinated with the pink taper candles running down the centre of the table, while all of those candles were displayed in the brass candlestick holders my mom collected in Saudi Arabia.
It created a fun little theme without making the table feel overly coordinated.
And yes, once you notice that the napkins are candles too, you can’t unsee it!

A Napkin Fold Inspired by My MSC Cruise
One of the things I love about travelling is bringing little pieces of inspiration home with me.
I certainly wasn’t sitting at dinner on my MSC cruise thinking about my next tablescape post, but when I saw this fold, it caught my attention. I tucked the idea away knowing I wanted to try recreating it someday.
Then I pulled out my mom’s candlestick collection for my fall table and the idea suddenly made perfect sense.
Travel inspiration + family treasures + tablescaping? That sounds pretty much perfect for A Labour of Life.
When to Use a Candle Napkin Fold
Although I created mine for fall, this is definitely one of those folds you can use throughout the year. It would be especially pretty for Thanksgiving, Christmas, a romantic dinner, Valentine’s Day, a wedding or anniversary dinner.
Imagine red napkin candles for Christmas, white or ivory for a wedding, orange for Thanksgiving or deep burgundy for a dramatic fall table.
Change the napkin colour and the same fold takes on a completely different personality.

Save This Candle Napkin Fold for Your Next Tablescape
Decorative napkin folds are one of my favourite inexpensive ways to make a table feel special. You don’t have to purchase another piece of décor—you simply turn something you already need on the table into part of the decorating.
And this one comes with a little travel story attached.
Thank you, MSC, for the inspiration. I couldn’t resist bringing this candle napkin fold home with me.
