Create an Easy Leaf Napkin Fold for a Fall Table
Last Updated on 2026-10-03 by Linda
There is something about autumn that makes me want to add a little extra warmth and creativity to the table. Rich colours, seasonal flowers, pumpkins and beautiful cloth napkins can turn even a simple meal into a special occasion.
This easy leaf napkin fold is a lovely finishing touch for a fall tablescape or Thanksgiving dinner. The pointed layers resemble autumn leaves, while a decorative napkin ring holds everything together in the centre.
It may look complicated sitting on the plate, but the fold is surprisingly easy to recreate. All you need is a square cloth napkin, a napkin ring and a few minutes.

Quick Answer: How Do You Make a Leaf Napkin Fold?
Lay a square cloth napkin flat, locate the centre and fold the fabric into a long layered strip. Pinch the strip together at its midpoint, bring the two sides together and secure the centre with a napkin ring. Separate and shape the pointed layers to resemble fall leaves.
What You Need
- One square cloth napkin
- One napkin ring
- A flat surface for folding
- An iron or steamer, if needed
A medium-weight cotton or cotton-blend napkin works especially well because it is soft enough to fold but still has enough structure to hold the leaf shape.
How to Make a Leaf Napkin Fold
Step 1: Lay the Napkin Flat
Begin with a square cloth napkin placed completely flat on your work surface.
Smooth out the napkin with your hands and remove any large wrinkles. If your napkin has a right and wrong side, place the side you want showing face down.
Set your napkin ring nearby so it is ready when you reach the final steps.

Step 2: Find the Centre of the Napkin
Locate the centre of the square napkin. You can do this by gently bringing the sides together or by following the existing centre creases.
Lightly pinch or mark the middle without making a tight permanent crease. This centre point will help keep the finished leaf fold balanced.

Step 3: Fold the Napkin in Half
Fold the square napkin in half to form a long rectangle.
Match the outside edges as evenly as possible and smooth the fabric with your hands. Keep the centre crease running across the middle of the rectangle.

Step 4: Fold the First Section Toward the Centre
Take the upper section of the napkin and fold it diagonally inward toward the centre.
The fabric should begin forming a pointed, angled layer rather than a straight horizontal fold. Smooth the section gently while keeping the edges aligned.

Step 5: Fold the Opposite Section Inward
Bring the opposite section inward toward the same centre point.
The two angled sections should now meet near the middle, creating layered triangular shapes. Hold the centre in place with one hand as you adjust the fabric with the other.

Step 6: Straighten the Folded Napkin
Arrange the folded layers so the napkin forms a long rectangle again.( Basically flip over )
Smooth the fabric and make sure the pointed sections remain tucked neatly inside. The folds do not need to be pressed completely flat—the slight softness will help create fuller leaves later.

Step 7: Fold One Long Side Inward
Take one long side of the napkin and fold it inward toward the centre.
Run your hand lightly along the fold to hold it in place. Try to keep the width fairly even from one end of the napkin to the other.

Step 8: Pinch the Napkin at the Centre
Find the midpoint of the folded strip
fold up each side Keep holding the centre while allowing the pointed ends to spread naturally.

Step 9: Bring the Folded Sides Together
Continue holding the centre and slowly accordian fold the napkin
Arrange the folded layers so there are pointed sections on both sides of your hand. These points will become the individual leaves in the finished design.

Step 10: Add the Napkin Ring and Shape the Leaves
Slide the pinched centre of the napkin through your napkin ring. Pull enough fabric through to hold the fold securely, but do not pull the entire napkin through.
Place the napkin on your plate and gently separate the pointed layers. Fan them outward and adjust each point until the napkin resembles a group of autumn leaves.
There is no need for every side to look perfectly identical. A little variation makes the finished fold look softer and more natural.

Tips for a Fuller Leaf Shape
For the best results, avoid pressing every fold too firmly. Leaving some softness in the fabric allows you to fluff and shape the individual leaves after adding the napkin ring.
If the napkin looks too flat, gently pull each pointed layer away from the centre. You can also tuck one or two of the lower layers underneath to give the upper leaves more height.
A decorative napkin ring adds another seasonal element. I used one with a floral detail, but rings decorated with pumpkins, acorns, leaves, wood beads or warm metallic finishes would also work beautifully.

Choosing Colours for a Fall Leaf Napkin Fold
Orange, rust, burgundy, mustard yellow and deep green napkins are natural choices for autumn. You could also use cream or soft beige napkins for a more neutral Thanksgiving table.
For this setting, the orange napkins coordinate with the pumpkin centrepiece, fall flowers and warm accents throughout the tablescape. The bright colour also stands out beautifully against the pale dinner plates.

Where to Use This Napkin Fold
This leaf napkin fold would be perfect for:
- Thanksgiving dinner
- A fall dinner party
- Friendsgiving
- Harvest celebrations
- Autumn brunch
- Halloween entertaining
- A seasonal family gathering
You could even use a different fall colour at every place setting to create the look of changing leaves around the table.

Can You Make the Leaf Napkins Ahead of Time?
Yes. You can prepare the folds earlier in the day and place them directly on the dinner plates.
If you need to make them the night before, fold each napkin, add the napkin ring and store it flat in a clean container. Wait until shortly before your guests arrive to fan and shape the leaves so they remain full and crisp.
A Simple Finishing Touch for an Autumn Table
Creative napkin folds are one of my favourite ways to make a table feel special without purchasing new dishes or decorations. This easy leaf napkin fold adds colour, texture and a little seasonal personality using items you may already have at home.
Once you have made the first one, the remaining napkins come together quickly. Add them to your place settings, light the candles and enjoy gathering around a beautiful fall table.
Because sometimes it is the smallest details that make guests feel the most welcome.
