One of my favourite parts of travelling is discovering the small businesses that truly reflect the character of a community. While restaurants and attractions often make the itinerary, it’s the local artisans and makers who leave some of the most lasting impressions.

During my time in Thunder Bay, I had the pleasure of visiting Dew Velle, a charming boutique specializing in handcrafted soaps, luxurious lotions, bath products, and thoughtfully curated self-care items. From the moment I walked through the door, it was clear this wasn’t just another gift shop—it was a place built on creativity, craftsmanship, and a genuine passion for helping people enjoy a little everyday luxury. It is a by-appointment shop at the moment but I expect big things will happen for this quaint little shop.

A Boutique Filled with Beautiful Scents

Walking into Dew Velle is an experience for the senses. Shelves are lined with beautifully handcrafted soaps in an array of colours, textures, and fragrances. Whether you gravitate toward fresh citrus, calming lavender, warm vanilla, floral blends, or earthy botanicals, there is something to suit every preference.

Each display invites you to slow down, explore, and discover new favourites. Unlike mass-produced products, every item feels unique and carefully made, adding to the charm of shopping locally.

More Than Just Soap

Although Dew Velle is well known for its handcrafted soaps, you’ll quickly discover that their collection extends far beyond the soap bar.

Visitors can browse an impressive assortment of:

  • Rich moisturizing body lotions
  • Nourishing hand creams
  • Bath and body products
  • dish soaps
  • Seasonal collections and specialty fragrances
  • Thoughtfully selected self-care accessories

It’s the kind of store where you arrive intending to purchase one item and inevitably leave with several gifts—for yourself and others.

Supporting Local Makes Every Purchase More Meaningful

One of the reasons I love featuring businesses like Dew Velle is because every purchase supports local entrepreneurship and craftsmanship.

Shopping small isn’t simply about buying a product—it’s about investing in the people behind the business. Every handcrafted soap, lotion, and gift represents hours of creativity, testing, production, and care. That personal touch is something you simply can’t replicate with products found on big-box store shelves.

As travellers, seeking out locally owned businesses also allows us to experience destinations more authentically. Instead of taking home another souvenir, we bring home something that was created right in the community we visited.

Perfect Gifts for Every Occasion

If you’re looking for unique gift ideas, Dew Velle offers plenty of inspiration.

Their products make wonderful gifts for:

  • Birthdays
  • Mother’s Day
  • Teachers
  • Hostess gifts
  • Bridal showers
  • Baby showers
  • Holiday gift exchanges
  • Thank-you gifts
  • Care packages

Beautifully packaged and made with care, they’re gifts that feel both personal and practical.

Why I Love Shopping Local While Travelling

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that some of my favourite travel memories come from the unexpected discoveries.

Finding a boutique like Dew Velle reminds me why I always make time to wander beyond the major attractions. It’s often these independent businesses that showcase the creativity, warmth, and entrepreneurial spirit of a community.

Thunder Bay is filled with passionate local makers, and Dew Velle is certainly one worth adding to your itinerary. Whether you’re searching for a luxurious lotion, a beautifully scented handcrafted soap, or simply want to browse a lovely local shop, it’s well worth stopping in.

Final Thoughts

If your travels take you to Thunder Bay, consider spending an afternoon exploring some of the city’s incredible locally owned businesses. Dew Velle is a wonderful reminder that the best travel experiences aren’t always the biggest attractions—they’re often the places where passion, creativity, and community come together.

Whether you’re treating yourself to a little self-care or searching for the perfect gift, Dew Velle offers products that are thoughtfully crafted and made to be enjoyed every day.

Sometimes the best souvenirs are the ones you can actually use.

My Thunder Bay Adventures

Every destination has its hidden gems, and Thunder Bay has quickly become one of my favourite places to explore in Northwestern Ontario. From locally owned restaurants and craft breweries to artisan shops, unique attractions, and unforgettable experiences, every visit introduces me to somewhere new.

This post is part of my growing Thunder Bay Adventures series, where I’m sharing the people, places, flavours, and experiences that make this city so special. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, passing through on a Northern Ontario road trip, or looking for inspiration for your next adventure, I hope these guides help you discover some local favourites.
