I may be doing a little Christmas dance over here. It is finally the time of year to start decking the halls with boughs of holly. Or maybe with a Christmas Felt Garland. Have you started decorating yet?
Decking the halls begins after November 11th in my home. and then this gal goes mad. Working like a fiend to get everything up so I can then start crafting even more. How crazy am I.
Homemade Christmas Garland
Christmas Felt Garlands, who hasn’t seen them and fallen in love? Plus it is the perfect all season decoration. Easily changing the colour scheme can make this the perfect addition to your mantle or wreath any holiday. Today I am focusing on Christmas and a standard colour palette.
If you know me, you know I can non-traditional most often. I have a pink tree in my living room and a jewel tone baby in my hall. This year I added a new tree in the Rec room but I really wanted a Grinch or Candy Cane inspired look.
Well the beauty of the holidays is you can improvise and create your own unique decorations. Turning the simplest of items into the prettiest ornaments. Today we are using felt, twine and ribbon . The beauty of this, no sewing, no glue, no machine, just scissors and your hands.
What you will need for the Garland
As I mentioned earlier no special tools are needed for this Christmas Felt Garland, just you and the ability to tie a knot.
- Felt in a few colours. I used 4 colours with 5 sheets of each
- Ribbon that complements your felt, I used two colours
- sturdy twine
- scissors
How to Create the Christmas Felt Garland
This was one of the easiest crafts I have created in a long time. And best of all, just like knitting I could do it in front of the TV. I grabbed my supplies and the remote. Hallmark Christmas movies and Christmas crafts go together like wine and cheese.
Garland Instructions
- Cut the felt into 1/2 inch wide strips. Don’t worry about the lines and cuts being perfect. This is a handmade felt garland, eyeball the strips and get cutting. Best size is about 5 inches long and a 1/2 inch wide.
- create a loop at the end of the twine. Don’t worry about cutting the twine yet, work with the ball of twine until you figure out the length of the garland strand. For me, I just kept adding bows until I ran out of felt.
- Alternating your felt colours, tie the felt on to the twine. I would recommend you alternate the angle at which you tie on the felt pieces, it creates that messy close together look.
- Keep tying the felt on the twine until you reach the end.
- Cut the twine allowing enough space for a loop at the end.
- Easy peasy, you are done, just figure out where you want to hang it.
- I added mine to the mantle and I love it.
Christmas Creative
Have you been crafting for the holidays? I figured working at home I have added two hours of craft/blog time to my day. No commuting has provided a few extra hours a day for me. Not that I have taken advantage of that fact till now lol.
I finally got my Holiday Grove back and inspiration is hitting me frequently. Looking for additional inspiration? I mean it will take you longer to hop over than it will to make my Candy Cane Holders. . If Candy Canes aren’t your jam ( well who are you) but maybe Nutcrackers are, I finally posted my Mini Clay Pot Nutcrackers so you may want to check it out.
