I am sure many of you have seen the French Toast Casserole on Pinterest but you may not yet have tried it.  We first had this at a friends camp last spring and then I found the recipe on Pinterest ( I know what a surprise finding a recipe on Pinterest.). This is a quick and simple meal to prepare in advance.

When to Serve the Casserole

As much as I would love to tell you this is an every day breakfast, I cannot.  This is one of those save for a special occasion  recipes.  Now do not misunderstand me, it’s not difficult not complicated just decadent.

This is the type of dish that makes the holidays special. It is the dish that will pull the children away from the Christmas Tree to come eat.

You don’t have to wait till Christmas but I would not be recommending an every Saturday morning.

Gather the Ingredients for French Toast Casserole

This does not require many ingredients but it does require planning.  The recipe only works if you prep the dish the night before.

  • a baquette
  • eggs
  • maple syrup
  • vanilla
  • cream cheese
  • icing sugar

How to Make a French Toast Casserole

  1. Spray pan and then add cut up bread ( day old French Baquette works perfect),
  2. pour egg mixture over bread, add half package of cream cheese ( recipe called for full pack but we found that a little to much)
  3. Cover container with foil and store in fridge overnight
  4. In the morning preheat oven to 350 and place casserole in oven
  5. Cook for about 45 minutes. Pour 3/4 maple syrup over the top or allow each to add their own

Tips for the Best Casserole

Don’t forget this is best when prepared the night before.  The longer the egg mixture can soak into the breat the tastier the dish will be.

You can also add Blueberries, raspberries even chocolate chips if you wish to adapt the flavout to suit your family.

What about Gluten Free?

This totally works with gluten free bread and makes such a nice treat for those who cannot eat glutemn.  We made an egg-nog gluten free version for one of our Christma Kids.

We actually were tired of always making her feel like an outsider and eating differently than the test of us. So one casserole and we all ate it.  Know what tasted the same as the one with gluten.  Gluten free does not mean you sacrifice flavour, you juts need to be creative.

Wow! I have never heard of this! I like that it is so much easier to make than regular French toast. This is going to be a very popular dish in my house!
