Hello dolly squares on a plate

Last Updated on 2021-01-24 by Linda

Hello Dolly’s or a Hello Dolly Squares, regardless of the name always a fav. This is truly one of my childhood favourites.  Pure sugar when you stop and think about it.

My mom reminded me that growing up whenever I flew over to visit this would be the first thing I had to make. Have you tried making them?

Fun Squares to Make

This is such a simple and fun recipe to try.  Normally I make it over the Christmas Holidays, isn’t that when we savour decadent desserts. As I review this I wonder why wait till the holidays, shouldn’t we celebrate always?

Fixing an easy and tasty square is a great way to celebrate together.  Search the cupboards and see if you have these five simple ingredients. Over the years I have discovered keeping these five ingredients in the cupboard has me always prepared.

Unexpected company dropping by and you want a dessert.  All the ingredients are durable dry goods that will not go bad.  Well OK Eagle Brand is not a dry good but still a totally durable ingredient that can stay for a long time in your cupboard.

What do you need to Make Hello Dolly Squares

The list is simple, as I said five simple ingredients that you probably have in stock.

 butter
  graham waver crumbs
 semi sweet chocolate chips
 coconut
 chopped walnuts
 eagle brand sweetened condensed milk

So did you check?  Do you have the supplies on hand?  I try and have eagle brand condensed milk always in the cupboard. The remaining four, well who doesn’t have butter, graham crumbs, coconut, chocolate chips and walnuts on hand.

How do I make Hello Dolly’s

Let’s go step by step. You will not believe how easy this is. Better yet, have a non baker or your child follow your instructions and see how easy it is. Let’s get going, don’t forget to preheat your oven to 325.

1)Mix melted butter and graham crumbs to form a crust
2)add chocolate chips.
3)sprinkle the  coconut flakes over the base
4)gently spread the chopped Walnuts

5) slowly pour a can of eagle brand slowly over all the ingredients

6)Bake 25 minutes, let cool and then cut into small squares

So how did you do?  Have you tried them yet? Have you saved the recipe to try during the holidays?

Hello Dolly Squares or Hello Dolly Bars

So one more thing before we go, what the heck are these called really?  Bars, Squares, Hello Dolly’s?  I never know what the true name is so usually I go with Hello Dolly’s, seems to work.

or maybe go crazy with ” Sex in a Pan” that seems to cover all options.  Somehow I don’t think the relatives I got the recipe from would appreciate that one though.

Now if you like these squares I bet you would love my Skor Bar Squares or Brownie Cheesecake.

Can the Squares be frozen?

During the Christmas holidays i make all my cookies and squares in advance and then I freeze them.  It keeps all my baking fresh and ensures I always have a ton of sweets on hand.  These squares are perfect for freezing but make sure you cut them first and ensure there is wax paper in between the layers.

Also one of my favorites. Almost always have a can of condensed milk in my pantry for just this recipe…just in case I need a quick treat for something.

Growing up my family loved these, too. Although we called them 7 Layer Bars because we had an additional ingredient in there- butterscotch chips. You should try those in there next time- so good!
