How to Fold a Bat Napkin for Halloween
Sometimes one little detail is all it takes to turn an ordinary table into something special.
For my Orange and Black Halloween Tablescape, that detail was definitely the napkins.
Using a simple square orange cloth napkin, I created a fun bat napkin fold that sits right on top of each black place setting. The wide wings and pointed centre immediately give it that recognizable bat shape, making it perfect for a Halloween dinner or party.
And although the finished bat looks impressive, it’s actually much easier to create than you might think.
Grab a square cloth napkin and follow along as I show you how to fold a bat napkin for Halloween, step by step.

What You Need to Make a Bat Napkin
You don’t need any special supplies for this Halloween napkin fold.
All you need is:
- One square cloth napkin for each place setting
- A flat surface for folding
- An optional bat napkin ring or Halloween accent
I used bright orange cloth napkins because they really stand out against my black dinnerware and tie into the orange and black colour scheme of my Halloween table.
But don’t feel limited to orange.
Black, purple, deep red or even patterned Halloween napkins could create an entirely different bat.
A cloth napkin with a little structure works particularly well because it helps the wings hold their shape.
How to Fold a Bat Napkin for Halloween
This bat napkin fold looks impressive on a Halloween table, but once you see the folding sequence, it is surprisingly simple. I used an orange square cloth napkin, which makes the bat shape really stand out against black Halloween dinnerware.
Step 1: Start With a Square Napkin
Lay your square cloth napkin completely open and flat on your work surface. Smooth it out as much as possible before you begin.

Step 2: Fold the Napkin in Half Diagonally
Bring one corner of the napkin over to the opposite corner to create a large triangle. Line up the edges. ( or fold slightly off to try and create the bat ears at the end)

Step 3: Fold the Long Edge Up Over the Triangle
With your napkin folded into a large triangle, take the long folded edge along the bottom and fold it upward over the triangle. This creates a narrower folded section across the napkin and sets you up to form the bat wings.

Step 4: Fold the First Wing Up From the Centre
Find the centre point of the napkin. Starting at that centre, fold one side upward and outward to create the first bat wing. The pointed end should extend up and away from the centre.

Step 5: Fold the Second Wing Up From the Centre
Repeat the same fold on the opposite side. Fold upward from the centre, bringing the second pointed end out to form the other wing.
You should now have two long pointed wings extending from the centre of the napkin.

Step 6: Open and Shape the Bat Wings
Gently spread and adjust both sides until the napkin resembles a bat. Don’t worry about making the wings perfectly symmetrical—a little variation actually gives your bat more character.

A Simple Halloween Napkin Fold
And that’s it! What starts as one simple square napkin becomes a fun little bat ready for your Halloween table.
I love this fold because you don’t need a napkin ring, ribbon or any special supplies. All you need is a square cloth napkin and a few folds. Orange works beautifully with my Halloween tablescape, but black, purple or even patterned Halloween napkins would be fun too.
Place your finished bat on top of a dinner plate or charger and gently spread the wings before your guests arrive. It’s an easy detail that makes the whole place setting feel a little more special.

Place Your Bat Napkin on the Table
Your bat is ready to fly straight onto your Halloween table.
Place the finished napkin in the centre of your dinner plate with the wings stretching across the place setting.
On my table, I placed the bright orange bat napkins over simple black dishes and orange chargers.
That contrast really makes the shape stand out.

Make Your Bat Napkin Fold Your Own
Once you understand the basic fold, there are plenty of ways to change the look.
Try a black napkin for a traditional Halloween bat.
Use purple for something a little more whimsical.
Deep burgundy or red could create a dramatic vampire-inspired table.
Or use orange like I did for a classic Halloween colour combination.
You can also experiment with the size of the wings. Spread them wide for a dramatic place setting or tuck them in slightly if you’re working with smaller plates.
There’s no rule that says every bat at the table has to look exactly the same.

Using Bat Napkins on a Halloween Tablescape
I originally created these napkins for my orange and black Halloween tablescape, where they became the focal point of each place setting.
I paired them with black dinnerware, orange chargers, spiderweb linens, skeleton dogs, eyeballs, poison syringes, skulls and plenty of other creepy Halloween characters.

It’s a great example of how something as simple as changing the napkin fold can completely transform dishes and linens you’ve used before.
You don’t need an entirely new collection of Halloween dishes every year.
Sometimes you just need a new idea.

A Simple Halloween Decorating Idea
One of the reasons I love decorative napkin folds is that they’re such an affordable way to change a table.
You don’t have to buy new dishes.
You don’t need an elaborate centerpiece.
And you certainly don’t have to spend a fortune on seasonal decor.
Start with what you already own and look for one little detail you can change.
For this Halloween table, a simple orange square of fabric became a bat.
And suddenly the entire table had a theme.
That’s the kind of decorating magic I love.
Finding Joy Around the Table
Tablescaping has never been about creating a perfectly matched table for me. It’s about taking pieces I’ve collected over the years, mixing them with everyday dishes and linens, and finding a new way to tell a story each time I set the table.
From simple fall tables to Thanksgiving gatherings and whimsical Halloween settings like this one, every table can feel completely different with a few thoughtful details.
That’s part of the joy of gathering around the table — using what you love, adding a little creativity and creating a setting that makes the people sitting around it smile.
And if a bat, witch or skeleton happens to join us along the way?
There’s always room for one more at my table.
