How to Fold a Witch Hat Napkin for Halloween
Last Updated on 2026-09-21 by Linda
Sometimes the smallest detail on a table becomes the one everyone notices.
For my Witch Hat Halloween Tablescape, that detail was definitely the napkins.
Using a simple square orange cloth napkin, I created a whimsical witch hat that sits right on top of each place setting. It’s festive, inexpensive and a fun way to give an ordinary napkin a completely different look for Halloween.
And despite the finished result looking a little complicated, the fold itself is actually quite manageable once you see it broken down step by step.
So grab a square cloth napkin and let’s create a little Halloween magic.

What You Need to Make a Witch Hat Napkin
You really don’t need very much for this Halloween napkin fold:
- One square cloth napkin for each place setting
- A flat surface for folding
- An optional Halloween napkin ring, bat clip or small decorative accent
I used bright orange cloth napkins because I wanted them to pop against my black dishes, but you could certainly use black, purple, green or even a Halloween-patterned napkin.
A napkin with a little structure works particularly well because it helps the pointed witch hat keep its shape.

Step 1: Start With a Square Napkin
Lay your cloth napkin completely flat on your work surface.
Smooth out any large wrinkles with your hands before you begin.
If your napkin has a right and wrong side, place the side you ultimately want showing face down.

Step 2: Fold the Napkin in Half
Fold the square napkin diagonally so that two opposite corners meet.
You should now have a large triangle.
Line up the edges as evenly as possible and smooth the fold with your hand.

Step 3: Begin Creating the Long Point of the Hat
Take one side of the triangle and fold it inward toward the centre.
This begins forming the long, narrow point that will eventually become the top of the witch’s hat.
Press the fold flat as you work.

Step 4: Fold the Other Side Across
Bring the opposite side inward and across the first fold.
You should now see a much narrower triangular shape beginning to form.
Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly symmetrical. Witch hats aren’t exactly known for being perfectly tailored!

Step 5: Shape the Point
Continue adjusting the long folded section so that the top forms a nice pointed triangle.
Run your hand along the folded edges to help everything stay in place.
At this stage, the napkin should begin to resemble the tall pointed crown of a witch’s hat.

Step 6: Fold One Bottom Corner Outward
Now we’re going to create the brim.
Take one of the lower corners and fold it outward, away from the centre point.
This gives one side of the witch’s hat its exaggerated brim.

Step 7: Fold the Opposite Corner Outward
Repeat the same process with the opposite bottom corner.
Fold it outward so that you have a wide brim extending on both sides of the pointed centre.
Adjust the two sides until you’re happy with the shape.

Step 8: Secure and Shape the Witch Hat
Gently pinch and adjust the folds around the centre.
This is where you can play with the shape a little.
Pull the brim outward, straighten the pointed crown and fluff the folds until the napkin looks like a witch’s hat rather than simply a folded triangle.
I added a small bat accent at the centre to help hold the fold together and give the hat an extra Halloween detail.
You could also use a Halloween napkin ring, a ribbon, a spider ring or another small seasonal decoration.

Step 9: Place Your Witch Hat on the Table
And that’s it!
Place your finished witch hat napkin in the centre of your dinner plate and make any final adjustments once it’s in position.
The pointed centre creates the crown while the folded sides form that wonderfully crooked witch-hat brim.

Against my black dishes and orange chargers, the bright orange napkins really became the star of each place setting.
Make the Witch Hat Napkin Your Own
One of the reasons I love decorative napkin folds is that you can change the entire effect just by changing the colour.
Try:
- Black napkins for a classic witch’s hat
- Orange napkins for a bright Halloween table
- Purple napkins for a whimsical witch theme
- Green napkins for a slightly Wicked-inspired look
- Patterned napkins for something more playful
You can also change the accent in the centre.
Instead of my little bat, try a spider ring, miniature buckle, black ribbon, Halloween brooch or small seasonal ornament.
Use whatever you already have tucked into your Halloween decorating bins.

Using the Witch Hat Napkin on a Halloween Tablescape
I created these napkins specifically for my Witch Hat Halloween Tablescape, where I paired them with black dinnerware, orange chargers, skeleton hands, potion bottles, cauldrons, coffin boxes and plenty of creepy Halloween details.

That’s one of my favourite things about napkin folding.
You don’t need to replace all of your dishes and table linens every time you want a new look. Sometimes one creative detail is enough to completely change the personality of a table.
More Halloween Napkin Fold Ideas
Once you start playing with Halloween napkins, it’s hard to stop.
Along with this witch hat fold, I’m also creating tutorials for some of the other Halloween napkins I’ve used on my tables.

And as I add more Halloween napkin tutorials, I’ll continue linking them here so they’re easy to find.
These individual tutorials can also be used independently of the full tablescapes. You could make witch hat napkins for a Halloween party, buffet table, kids’ dinner or even a casual October family meal.

A Simple Halloween Detail With Big Impact
You don’t need an elaborate centerpiece or expensive new dishes to make a holiday table feel special.
Sometimes it’s one unexpected detail that makes people stop and smile.
For this table, it was a square orange napkin transformed into a witch’s hat.
Simple.
Festive.
Just a little bit wicked.
And exactly the kind of Halloween decorating I love.
Finding Joy Around the Table
Tablescaping has never been about creating a perfectly matched table for me. It’s about taking pieces I’ve collected over the years, mixing them with everyday dishes and linens, and finding a new way to tell a story each time I set the table.
From simple fall tables to Thanksgiving gatherings and whimsical Halloween settings like this one, every table can feel completely different with a few thoughtful details.
That’s part of the joy of gathering around the table — using what you love, adding a little creativity and creating a setting that makes the people sitting around it smile.
And if a witch or two happens to join us along the way?
There’s always room for one more at my table.
