How to Wear Leggings Over 50

Well, I am going to show my ageism in this one, shocking isn’t it. I am never one about age dictates style, honestly with leggings my rules/suggestions are for all ages. I don’t believe leggings are a replacement for pants/trousers. YIKES my age is really showing isn’t it?

On a serious note so many people of all ages love leggings as a go-to style and wear them with everything. They will wear a cropped top, short Tee’s, tank tops you name it, it fits with their style.

My style, however, has more to do with menopause bellies and not being in the greatest shape anymore. My style choices for leggings will always involve covering the butt and belly. So, it is an age thing, a size thing, or a confidence thing? Who knows but it is my thing. Today, however I am going to show you 4 fun ways leggings are a staple in my over 50 wardrobe. Heck only a few more months of saying that, this gal is heading into the over 60 fashions in the New Year.

Can Women over 50 Wear Leggings

Can 50 year old woman wear leggings? Many women have the misconception that leggings are only for casual wear and should only be worn by those who are slim and in great shape. Nothing could be further from the truth. With proper fit and accessories, any woman over fifty can wear these with confidence.

4 Ways to Wear Leggings Over 50

Let’s begin with the basics shall we. Leggings are a staple and have a place in all our closets. Personal choice and style will dictate how you wear them but there are several stylings for me. Wearing leggings as a look does not mean wearing your lululemon and tee’s shopping. Again I realize that several generations now believe the athleisure look is gym attire but trust me it really isn’t. It is a look just not an actual style says this “boomer” .

I shared years ago my feelings on travel style and how society has changed so much. I miss the days of dressing up, but I can move with the times and incorporate current trends in this old brain (and body).

So how does one wear leggings over 50 and look stylish, I guess that is the key. Anyone can wear leggings but how can you look great and street ready while wearing them?

My four go to’s

• Cardigan
• Chambray
• Plaid
• Tunic

Now don’t get my wrong there are tons of ways to wear leggings but I tend to stick to these.

Leggings with a Cardigan

The leggings are perfect with a cardigan. For those of us a little shy about our middle section. A cardigan allows some discretion. It skims the butts, bellies, and creates a sleek silhouette. This look I paired a loose pair of leather leggings with a cashmere cardigan from Woolover.

A light cami underneath, a fun pair of booties and a statement necklace and I was office ready and Yes I did wear this to the office. Add a fun jacket overtop if the weather is cool.

Wearing Leggings with Chambray

Showing off a winter look here but wearing leggings with chambray is perfect. The chambray can be a shirt dress or a long shirt. Basically, it is just covering the legs to add a little warmth on those cooler days. Forget bare legs or tights, leggings offer just a bit more warmth and freedom. It’s like pants or bike shorts under a dress.

For this fun winter look I added a pair of knee high Boots with my leggings, threw on a chambray dress and a fun fur vest. The belt is optional, but it added a bit of shape.

Plaid and Leggings over 50

Probably caught you off with this one, leggings and plaid and you were expecting a button shirt right? Well that works as well. I love a fun patterned tunic shirt as a base for my leggings. Throw on an OTK boot, a fun leather jacket and I feel fabulous. This truly is one of more regular go to looks. The leggings just add a bit more dimension. matching the boot and legging when you are a little shorter also helps elongate the leg.

and yes I have worn leggings with a plaid shirt and cardigan and actually left it open. trying to feel mor modern and bold and confident. Remember it is always about what makes you feel comfortable when you look in the mirror and walk down the street. Forget what the “web” says or even what I say. If it makes you feel good wear the leggings your way.

A Tunic and Leggings Over 50

And then we have my al time favourite way to wear leggings, with a tunic. There is something about this combo that just speaks to me. Honestly a tunic is probably close to a mini dress so I am channeling 20 year old Linda with this look, just in a 50ish way.

If you scroll through my old posts you will see this look repeat itself. Sometimes with a bootie, or a knee high or OTK Boot. Often with a Moto Jacket or a cardigan thrown over because i do love to layer. But always a tunic and leggings.
