Staying safe on your travels is always important, but it’s not just your physical safety that you need to watch out for. One of the risks that you face when you’re traveling is identity theft, having people steal your private information and various scams.

While these dangers exist, once you’re aware of them you can take the right steps to protect yourself. By keeping your private information as secure as possible, you can prevent some of these problems from occurring. So how do you make sure that you stay safe on your travels and protect yourself and your identity?

Protect Your Gadgets

Taking some tech on vacation with you can be really useful. It can give you the tools that you need to avoid getting lost, stay in touch with people at home, find important information, and even keep yourself safe. But you should also be careful with your gadgets.

Firstly, only take what you really need. Consider having a separate phone for traveling that doesn’t contain your personal information. You could save money by buying a local SIM card for it too. Update the security on all of your electronics too so that you can keep them safe as you travel.

Use a VPN

It’s handy to be able to connect to WiFi in public or in the places you’re staying. However, doing this could make your personal information vulnerable. If you want to protect yourself, you should consider using a VPN (virtual private network). It will keep your browsing private, which is useful for public WiFi.

You can read more at troypoint.com about how a VPN can protect you while you’re streaming TV. The VPN adds an extra layer of protection so that no one can see what you’re doing online and it can help you to get past content filters or geo-blocks too.

Keep Important Documents and Cards Close

Make sure you only take the necessary documents traveling, such as your passport and insurance documents. It’s a good idea to make copies and leave them with someone trusted. You might even be able to drop them off at the nearest embassy or consulate.

Either have your documents on your person and keep them out of sight or leave them somewhere secure, such as a safe in your hotel room. Be careful with your cards too, making sure they’re always in your sight and you don’t flash them around. Small tip, i leave mine locked up but have a picture of them on my phone just in case. I also recommend leaving a photocopy at home with family as an added protection.

Be Aware of Scams

It’s a good idea to be aware of common scams when you’re traveling so you can avoid them. For example, one scam is for restaurant servers to copy your card details.

Never let them leave your table with your card – either make sure they use the mobile payment device at the table or go with them to pay so your card is always in your sight. Check your bank and card statements regularly to keep an eye out for any suspicious payments.

Protect your identity and your personal information when you travel by taking precautions and keeping your information close.
