If y’all recall last year I rediscovered my love of pom pom crafts. Figuring out new ways to work with yarn is both restful and relaxing, and what I really need. Today I created a beautiful St Patrick’s Day Pom Pom Garland in the colours of the shamrock.
Shades of green and a little bit of white help bring the lil bit of Irish into my living Room. It also is the cutest accessory for the fireplace.

Making a St Patricks Day Pom Pom Garland
Making the garland was easy, determining the colour scheme a total no brainer. Shades of forest, white and emerald seemed to be the theme I was aiming for this year. Three skeins of yarn would allow me to alternate the palette as I saw fit.
Do you remember making pom poms as a child? Making the cardboard circle with the hole in the center? Apparently I have memory fail because when I searched making pompoms I was a bit taken aback.
I remember making circle wheels but not the style I am seeing today. I think like new math, the times have changed. No matter I found the most magical tool on Amazon ( and Michael’s). Cardboard circles be gone.
The Pom Pom Wheel
Isn’t this the most magical tool. A plastic wheel that makes the perfect size pom pom every time. I picked up a package of two but you can get a package of four on line. Better deal for the money and it allows varied sizes. More depth to your craft.
Creating the pom poms was easy. I alternated single colours, double colours and made a few tri-coloured balls. Sitting in front of the tv, is was like knitting with less concentration. Conversation was easy and unlike when I am on the computer I could actually engage in conversation. Pom Pom crafts allowed mingling and creativity.
What you will need for a Pom Pom Garland
The supplies are simple.
- two or three skeins of Yarn in colours you want
- pom pom maker
- scissors
- darning needle
How to make a St Patrick’s Day Garland
Making the garland is simple and is a matter of taste.
- decide on colour scheme
- make pom poms, I made 6 large and 5 medium
- vary the colour of the pom poms for interest
- cut the tail off each pom pom as we will not tie them on.
- arrange pom poms to your taste and then cut a piece of yarn the length of your garland plus 4 inches
- thread the yarn through the darning needle
- Tie a loop on one end of the yarn and then start “sewing the pom poms together.
- once all the pom poms are on the string space them evenly apart and tie a loop in the end
- find a great place to display.
Seeing the Wheel in Motion
Creating the perfect pom pom takes time and a good eye. Trust your gut regarding depth of yarn on the wheel. An remember the ticker the wool the faster the creation.
Threading the Pom Pom’s
I liked using a darning needle to sew the pom poms together. You can also use twine or ribbon and you can tie the balls on if you prefer.

Okay, I never made pom poms as a kid. I must have been neglected or abused, LOL!!!
But seriously, as a knitter, I don’t even have one of those cool pom makers!!! I can’t believe I don’t. I’ll have to add it ASAP!!
It’ll be a great way to use up all of my yarn (well, not all, but some, haha)
