I am usually a fanatic about recycling and composting, I mean really I would love to leave this world in better shape than it is today and I do believe we all have a responsibility to do what we can.  I sort my cans, plastic, glass, paper and cardboard every week.  I return my wine, liquor and beer bottles and I of course use my composite bin ( even in the summer when it gets icky and gross, that is one thing that I do prefer in the winter LOL). Good lord I even take the pop tops off my cans and send them to a women who collects them.

I am at  convention this week and in an attempt to green members were encouraged to get all documents electronically and bring ipads/tablets to session ( first time we are ever encouraged to keep our electronic devices on).  I do have to laugh at the number of people who carry a piece of paper, a pop bottle and a coffee cup over to the recycling bins and, recycle the paper, the bottle and then throw the coffee cup in the waste basket ( seriously peeps the cups are made of cardboard/paper, HELLO recycle bins.)

Did you know most people claim they do not recycle because they are not sure if something should be???  Sad isn’t it ( unless it is Styrofoam people there is a good chance it should not go to the landfill, and heck why take a chance if ya think it should be, then treat it that way right, better for someone in the recycle factories sort it out then we mess up and send it to landfill)
Ironically, just before heading to Convention as I was packing I looked in the waste bin in the bathroom and realized I had thrown two empty bottles of my Vanilla bath and body lotion…. WTH… I recycle everything at work, downstairs, at conventionm but in my bathroom I am too lazy to carry it downstairs???

OK I exaggerate slightly as I do try really hard on garbage day to sort out the garbage from the wastebaskets in the bathrooms, toilet paper rolls and plastics normally do get recycled but then  I ask myself  why take the chance, what if someone else is taking out the garbage and throws it all away???

Then it is my fault because I was to lazy to carry it downstairs and throw it in the plastic bin.
Recently I was asked to team up with Unilever to try and raise awareness on the fact that BATHROOM PRODUCTS are made of recycled materials  really they are. I promise you

Fact: Americans are more likely to go the distance to get a drink when thirsty, charge their phone, or answer a phone call, than walk an empty plastic bottle from the bathroom to the recycle bin. As a result, these easily recyclable bathroom products are contributing to nearly 29 million tons of plastics in landfills each year!
Fact: 1 in 5 Americans (20%, yep I can do math) have 10 or more bathroom products in plastic bottles in their WC’s at any given time. ( and yes folks I am totally guilty of this one)
Fact: Although the average American will have 8 products in recyclable containers in their bathrooms only 34% will recycle them, that is 600 million plastic bottles heading to the landfill ( seriously how can we be doing this)

The “Rinse. Recycle. Reimagine” program is part of the Unilever Sustainability plan and aims to increase its positive social impact while reducing its environmental impact. This is a new program designed to educate US, not U.S. people ” us” on bathroom recycling and how with so little effort we can make a difference, small changes making a huge difference.

We all wash our hair right, ( and some of us do that more frequently than others), we put on deodorant, skin cream…. I mean really the list goes on, personally I have the shampoo, conditioner, spray, spritz.. then deodorant and face cream, and body cream, and sunless tanners, and hand cream and OK you get the picture, lots of lovely plastic bottles reside in my bathroom ( and yours too).

So Unilever now wants you to start thinking about not only caring ( or taking care of) ourselves and lets expand that to all the products we use.  Imagine a hair brush from your shampoo bottle

Are ya with me folks?  Are you willing to change the world one bottle at a time?? Share a pic of your bathroom empties being recycled and Twitter or Instagram with the hastag #ReimagineThat and #Sweeps for the chance to win some awesome ” recycled” products.

Ready to save the world, reduce our water waste, every small step matters but let’s balance with common sense.  Check out my rant about the Ice Bucket Challenge and the world believeing one bucket will doom us all.  OK one small step does help but let’s use common sense OK.
