Rotel Dip is an easy cheesy versatile dip that needs just minutes to prepare! With only 3 ingredients, this quick dip recipe has been a crowd pleaser for years! For me it dates back to the early 80’s, yep you read that right. I was introduced to this delight while living in Saudi Arabia.
Fast forward to when we moved back home this delight disappeared from my life. I mean honestly Rotel was not a big name in Canada for many years. Imagine my delight when grocery shopping at Giant Tiger I noticed cans of Rotel on the self. I may have done a happy dance.
Rotel Dip for an Appetizer
Rotel dip is a nice and easy recipe very similar to a queso dip or Taco cheese dip, and can be made with just three simple ingredients! It is a creamy and slightly decadent app that will have you hovering over the bowl Betcha cant dip just one chip.
For those of you who don’t know what “Rotel” is- it’s just a can of diced tomatoes packed with a little green chilies. A delicacy I said earlier I was introduced to when we lived in Saudi Arabia. Apparently all my Texan friends knew about this long before the rest of us.
This is a popular Football appetizer but heck I opted for an all sports will due attitude. Hot dips work with hockey as well as football am I right?
What you will need for this Dip
Three simple ingredients to create the perfect dip. This is so very easy to make.
- 16 ounces of Velveeta
- 10 ounce can of Rotel
- 1 pound of hamburger
You can sub cream cheese or a spicier ground meat if you prefer. I also have heard of some folks adding a few additional spices for a unique flavour.
How to Make Rotel Dip
The perfect appetizer, Rotel Dip couldn’t get any easier to make or any easier to serve and eat, lol.
- Start by browning your hamburger in a frying pan until cooked through.
- As it’s cooking, cube the Velveeta cheese.
- Once the meat is thoroughly cooked, stir in the cubes of Velveeta cheese and the Rotel.
- Stir regularly as it melts and then it’s ready to serve
SUBSTITUTIONS:
MEAT: you can substitute spicy sausage for the ground beef if you prefer a little heat.
CHEESE: Switch the half of the Velveeta for one 8-oz brick of cream cheese — the result will be extra creamy. Some people have tried using just cream cheese but that to me is not Rotel Dip.
Serve with:
I am a traditionalist so give you nacho chips any day. Scoops work best to ensure a loving spoonful. I also love having a tray of veggies so we can pretend its a healthy option to the other snacks.
