The real estate is booming, not just in Ottawa but al over the place and that means everyone seems to be moving. While I love new spaces to decorate and set up, I recognize not everyone in our lives feels that way. Moving can be a traumatic experience and not just for us two legged folks. Take some time and help make your pup comfortable with their surroundings.
House Friendly
When moving homes with your pet there will always be a little bit of stress and anxiety. For any animal, the introduction to a new home is scary and it will take them some time to explore and get used to their surroundings.
It is so important when you move house and introduce your pet to a new space that you make them feel as comfortable as you can and ensure that they get used to their new home quickly.
Today we want to share some simple ways that you can make your pet more comfortable and happy when they move into their new home with you.
Take them on a tour
When you first step into your new home after using dog transport for your pet – you need to stay by their side and give them a little tour of the house. Keep your dog on a lead or walk with your cat into each different room and allow your pet to take the time to sniff things and explore.
This is an important step and it will allow your pet to get used to the new smells right away and will make them more comfortable and less likely to get lost in the house and panic later on. I swear even bringing a new rug home unsettles Lou and Wolfie.
Set up their stuff
Before your pet comes into your new house, the best thing you can do is set up all of their stuff and have it ready for them when they arrive. Your pet will need their water and food bowl out, to know where their litter tray is, and to have their beds set up in different rooms of the home.
You can also consider spreading a few toys around to give them something to chew on and to distract them a little during their first day in the new house. Obviously I tried that with Wolfie till Lou decided the pillow was hers. Cats, cannot live with them obviously can’t live without them.
Give them space
When you introduce your pet to their new home they will need some time to explore and get used to the home on their own time. After your initial tour just let them roam on their own for a while and get used to the house themselves.
It will likely take a few weeks for your pet to be fully settled in their new home but the more time they have to look around the better it will be for them and for you.
Have treats at the ready
When you bring a pet into a new house they will be nervous and they will likely worry that something is wrong.
It is important for you to get treats ready for your pet when you bring them to the house and as they explore, give them a few treats to make them happier. This is a great way to introduce them with positive reinforcement.
Give them cuddles
It is so important to be affectionate to your pet and reassure them when you reach your new home. Spend some time cuddling your pet during that first day and be sure that you keep them close and make them happy.
