This summer, JOEY Restaurant Group and Steam Whistle Brewing have teamed up to offer a unique taste of Canada to commemorate and celebrate our nation’s 150th. Beer is the beverage that Canadians reach for most often so this partnership was natural. The JOEY plus Steam Whistle collaboration kicks off with a series of patio parties across Canada, and continues all summer long with new globally inspired menu items recommended to pair with Canada’s Premium Pilsner. And hello folks I just may have happened upon one of the parties. A cool beer adventure for a summer evening in Ottawa.
In addition to the Joey and Steam Whistle partnership we also have the iconic Hudson’s Bay Collection joining the fun. Hudson Bay was looking for the partner for Canada’s 150th birthday celebration, a brand that shared Canadian heritage while also embodying the mood of the occasion. “Steam Whistle’s fun, social appeal make them a great partner,” said Hilary Kelley, Vice President Design, HBC Owned Brands. “The collaboration barware is a cool addition to our HBC Collection and we are excited to share it with customers.”
Kent and I were fortunate enough to attend a food and beer pairing at Joey Landsdowne ( and a huge Thank You to ML for including us as her guests). Steam Whistle and Joey created the perfect beer pairing menu.
Plus Canadian Certified Cicerone, Crystal Luxmore weighed in on why these food pairings work so well. She took us through savouring the beer, the perfect por and why each course was a natural fit. Crystal commented that “Steam Whistle Pilsner is a clean, refreshing lager that balances baguette-like sweetness with floral hop bitterness. Steam Whistle is bold enough to match the spices in these dishes, without clobbering the food’s flavours. And its bold effervescence cleanses your palate, readying you for the next bite.”
Coolest part was cleansing our palette, Ok not really cleansing but testing. She made us sample a jelly bean, first with our nose plugged. We then unplugged our nose and had the flavour explode. We taste through smell not through our tongues.
Moving on the the menu items prepared fresh for our table.
Perfect Pairings with Steam Whistle
These new item now being featured and perfect for a Steam Whistle Pairing: We started off with an amazing salad, well more a meal than a salad.
Katsu Chicken Peanut Salad – Fusion at its finest. “Chicken Katsu” is a Japanese dish of a seasoned crispy chicken breast, popular in Hawaii. This is the foundation to our Katsu Chicken Salad, we top this with a super refreshing salad of green papaya, kale, vegetables and peanuts, all tossed in a miso carrot dressing.
Next up was Sushi, now true confession I do not eat sushi. OK I did not eat sushi before. What’s a gal to do after watching the food demonstration, well like the song I Kissed a Girl and I liked it…. I ate his sushi….
Osaka Style Pressed Salmon Sushi – Torched with umami mayo and topped with crispy tempura bits and shaved serrano chili pepper, this Osaka style pressed sushi combines our premium sliced salmon with perfectly seasoned sushi rice.
The final course was a curry dip, my oh my the pop of flavours was amazing. Tasting the beer with each course created a new explosion of flavour.
Night Market Curry Dip – spicy and flavourful, chickpeas are tempered with coconut milk, fragrant curry paste and citrus juice. Served with cilantro, mint, house baked naan bread and crispy poppadum. Inspired by the chef’s visits to South East Asian Night Markets, this dish is perfect for sharing.
Joey’s then treated us to a Paper Plane. A savory cocktail that has me thinking I really do like bourbon.
Trust me on the new menu items, they are tasty, flavourful and you are going to want to try them. Head to the nearest Joey Restaurant , order a Steam Whistle and enjoy. You can thank me later.
Let’s not forget, its Canada and summer so can you have the perfect pairing of Food, Beer and great drinkware without a patio? I didn’t think so. Thank you Steam Whistle for sending us the most accommodating Beertender. Smiling through the rain and always ready with a beer in hand
By 7:00 the rain stopped, the sun came out and the Patio Party continued. ( plus there were awesome door prizes and gifts)
