Driving across Northern Ontario is one of those adventures where the journey is just as memorable as the destination. With hundreds of kilometres between communities, choosing the right place to stop for the night can make all the difference.
On our recent road trip to Thunder Bay, we spent the night at Super 8 by Wyndham Sault Ste. Marie, and it proved to be the perfect place to recharge before another day on Highway 17.
Whether you’re heading west to Thunder Bay, travelling east toward Sudbury or Ottawa, or simply exploring Sault Ste. Marie, this budget-friendly hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable overnight stay.
Why Stay in Sault Ste. Marie?
Sault Ste. Marie is one of the most popular stopping points for travellers driving across Northern Ontario. Roughly halfway between southern Ontario and Thunder Bay, it offers plenty of restaurants, shopping, waterfront attractions, and hotels, making it an ideal place to break up a long drive.
After a full day behind the wheel, we were more than ready to relax—and Super 8 made that easy.

The check-in process was quick and friendly, allowing us to settle in almost immediately after a long day on the road.
Our room was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed for an overnight stay. After hours of driving across Northern Ontario, a comfortable bed and a quiet room were exactly what we were looking for.

One of my favourite perks of staying at Super 8 by Wyndham Sault Ste. Marie was the complimentary breakfast.
When you’re on a road trip, it’s nice to start the day without having to search for a restaurant. Being able to grab breakfast before loading up the car made for an easy, stress-free start to our drive toward Thunder Bay.
It’s a simple convenience that saves both time and money, especially when you’re covering long distances across Northern Ontario.
Convenient Location for Northern Ontario Road Trips
One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location. With easy access to Highway 17, it’s an ideal stop whether you’re travelling west to Thunder Bay or heading east toward Sudbury or Ottawa.
Restaurants, shopping, fuel stations, and other services are all just a short drive away, making it easy to pick up anything you need before continuing your journey.

Our road trip to Thunder Bay was about so much more than simply getting from Ottawa to Northwestern Ontario. We turned the drive into part of the adventure, discovering fun roadside stops, local restaurants and places to stay along the way.
From an overnight stay at the Super 8 in Sault Ste. Marie and dinner in The Courtyard at Quattro, to a nostalgic stop at the Winnie the Pooh Museum in White River, there was plenty to discover before we even reached Thunder Bay.
