Test Kitchen Virgin Voyages:Dinner is an Experience
If you’re expecting a traditional cruise restaurant, Test Kitchen on Virgin Voyages will completely change your expectations.
Minimalist in both design and presentation, Test Kitchen feels more like stepping into a culinary laboratory than a dining room. Crisp white décor, stainless steel serving trays, an open exhibition kitchen, and chefs plating each course in full view of diners create an atmosphere that’s modern, interactive, and unlike anything else at sea.
Rather than ordering from a conventional menu, guests are presented with a simple list of ingredients. The creativity lies in discovering how the chefs transform those ingredients into beautifully plated dishes that are equal parts art and science. Every course arrives with a brief explanation, encouraging you to experience the flavours before asking exactly what you’re eating.
For adventurous food lovers, it’s one of the most memorable dining experiences aboard Scarlet Lady.

The Menu
On this sailing, we sampled Menu A, a six-course tasting experience that celebrated innovative techniques, artistic presentation, and unforgettable flavours. One of the things I loved most about Test Kitchen is its flexibility. Every menu includes vegetarian options, and if there’s a course you’d prefer not to have, the chefs are happy to offer a substitute. I decided to replace the Mushroom course with the Gazpacho, and it was a delicious, refreshing start to the meal.
Freshly Baked Bread
Every great meal begins with bread, and Test Kitchen sets the tone immediately.
Warm slices of rustic bread arrived with quality olive oil, offering a simple but delicious start while we watched the chefs preparing each course just a few feet away.

Mushroom
Our first course celebrated mushrooms in several different textures and preparations.
This delicate dish combined silky mushroom purée with roasted and pickled mushrooms, edible flowers, and fresh herbs. It was elegant, earthy, and beautifully plated—a perfect introduction to the restaurant’s philosophy that simple ingredients can become something extraordinary.

Gazpacho
The gazpacho was refreshingly vibrant and beautifully presented.
Its silky tomato base was topped with carefully arranged garnishes that added both texture and bursts of flavour. Cool, fresh, and light, it provided a wonderful contrast to the richer dishes that followed.

Egg Yolk & Caviar
Perhaps the most visually striking course of the evening.
A vibrant golden egg yolk rested atop fresh peas with tiny pearls of caviar and delicate herbs. Breaking the yolk allowed it to mingle with the peas, creating an incredibly rich and creamy dish balanced by the fresh sweetness of the vegetables and the salty pop of the caviar.
It was almost too pretty to eat.

Scallop & Ham
Next came perfectly seared scallops paired with thin slices of cured ham and fresh herbs.
The sweetness of the scallops contrasted beautifully with the savoury ham, while the presentation remained understated and elegant. It was one of those dishes where every bite felt carefully considered.

Beef Tenderloin
The star of the evening was undoubtedly the beef.
Cooked beautifully medium rare, the tenderloin was served over a vibrant berry reduction with fresh blueberries, herbs, and crisp mushrooms.
The richness of the beef paired wonderfully with the slightly tart berry sauce, creating a combination that was both comforting and unexpectedly sophisticated. It was easily one of my favourite courses of the night.
Chocolate Dessert
Dessert continued the restaurant’s artistic presentation.
Without relying on excessive sweetness, the chocolate course showcased multiple textures and flavours, proving that even the final plate stayed true to Test Kitchen’s philosophy of thoughtful experimentation.

Watching the Magic Happen
One of my favourite parts of the evening wasn’t just eating the food—it was watching the chefs create it.
Because the kitchen is completely open, diners can see every plate being assembled with incredible precision. Watching the team work in perfect synchronization added another layer to the experience and gave us an even greater appreciation for the skill behind every course.
Is Test Kitchen Worth Booking?
Absolutely.
If you enjoy trying new flavours, appreciate creative presentation, or simply want one of the most unique dining experiences at sea, Test Kitchen is well worth reserving. This isn’t your typical cruise dinner—it’s an interactive tasting experience where every course tells a story through technique, flavour, and artistry.
Even if one or two ingredients are outside your comfort zone, don’t let that stop you. The chefs are happy to accommodate substitutions when possible, and vegetarian options are available for every menu, making it an enjoyable experience for a wide variety of diners.

The ingredient-based menu, open kitchen, and carefully presented tasting courses create a genuinely immersive experience rather than just another YoPlay dinner. I especially liked the flexibility to swap courses and the detailed descriptions of the gazpacho, scallop and ham, and beef tenderloin. Based on this experience, I’d definitely consider booking Test Kitchen for a future Virgin Voyages sailing.
