Gold and cream tablescape for the Christmas season

Tis the time of year to start getting ready for the Holidays, Christmas is just around the corner and that means time to change the landscape, by which I really mean tablescape. Nothing says its the most wonderful time of the year better then a beautiful tablescape.  OK True a tree decorated with lights and tinsel says hello wonderful season too

For me the Christmas season starts with the table,  it will be the first hint when you walk into my home… Take a glance into the dining room, check out my table and that will tell you if I have begun the seasonal transition. Then of course it slowly starts spreading through the house.

Tablecloths, Chargers, dishes, it all blends together to celebrate the season.  For 2016 I am starting with the gold tablecloth and decided to add my Nana’s silverware. Why keep this stuff packed away. Do you really think your ancestors purchased these special items to hide away or to use? Memories are more than knowing you have something, its the actual using the item that brings the memories front and centre.  Do you really think that they designed the silverware to stay in a box, or for the china to stay in a cabinet?  No, of course not. they were made to be used and admired and cherished.  Cherished does not mean boxed away, it means to use , to love and to care for.
Creating the perfect table setting starts with one central piece and then you work from there.
I usually like to start with the tablecloth, it is the focal point and this helps determine how much you will actually place on the table.  A bust tablecloth requires less accessorizing then a plain.  Today I started with the gold. It was the statement I wanted to make for a more adult like table.( I use the plaid for the kid friendly version).
Once the tablecloth is decided, i then move to chargers or not.  Well actually rarely ever do I opt away from the chargers as they actually help keep the tablecloth clean.  Big hint Mom’s, they catch the crumbs and spills nicely.
Table cloth, chargers and then dishes and silverware and then I move to the center. I usually look around my house for pieces I may have that would work well.  For this table I used a gold ball tree I found at Target, usually a piece you may place on a side table but I decided it was perfect as a centerpiece.
The gold lead me to my bar cart where I grabbed the white and gold ornaments that I had and placed them on the table,  It was coming together perfectly.
The key to a fine table is making it yours, never fret that you have to purchase special decor, grab what is around your house and make it work.  I have used vases, upside down glasses, even books at times.  A few Christmas story books make a perfect centrepiece for the table.
I always end with a fun napkin design.  Trust me they are quick and easy and something you can even have the family help you with.  The trees are just folded, no special skills and imagine the face of a little one after designing a piece of art for your table.

I love creating amazing napkin creations for the holidays and thought that the tress were a perfect accent to my dishes. This is a really simple pattern to copy and really makes a wonderful statement.

I created some unique and fun chargers, a little bit of chalkboard paint and chalk allowed a personalization of each place setting ( something if you have children you can allow them to create to fully participate in the table decorating).

I am a real Christmas Fanatic, I have  three sets of Christmas dishes, numerous tablecloths and many, many chargers. All of this holiday goodness allows me to change my table frequently. From Gold, to plaid, to poinsettia, you name it I have it. The gold is fun because it allows me to pull together some fun pieces I have accumulated over the years, the deer and tree, the ball tree and some fun salt and pepper shakers. ( that’s a hobby I inherited from Nana).
Bringing together all of the special pieces do not only set a pretty table they create new memories and allow us moments to remember and reminisce about by gone Christmas’s. Family gatherings that we will all remember fondly

The special bonus of creating a beautiful table setting for the holidays, everyone figures the dining room is no longer the catch all room for all of their stuff. A set table does not allow for dropped books, old mail or newspapers…. how cool is that a set table keeps the room clean and holiday ready. Try it seriously it works.

Are you a table person? I set mine for every season and every holiday, setting the table is my happy place.  Funny statement, I bet if my dad could hear me say setting a table is my happy place he would be in total shock.  Truly the fights as a child about setting the table were crazy, flash forward its one of my favourite chores and one I try to share with others so they also start feling the joy.

Merry Christmas and hope you take a little something away and set your own “Peace” of solitude in your home.
