Thirsty Thursday Series -Hinterbrook

Hinterbrook is a small boutique vineyard located in the heart of Niagara on the Lake.

The historic site that is the home of Hinterbrook winery was first settled in 1789 by the Servos family who were United Empire Loyalists.

The Nickel family began farming this land when Phil’s father purchased it in 1963. At that time, the farm produced peaches, plums, cherries, pears and Concord grapes. As the property transferred to the next generation, the family planned for the possibility of establishing a winery at Hinterbrook and planted the first Vinifera grapes in 1998.

Kent and I discovered Hinterbrook on our first visit to Niagara in 2009 and at that time they only had their whites available, so we were really looking forward to trying some of their reds this visit.

When we arrived we noticed several changes and modifications, a restaurant had been added as well as a lovely Wine Garden

I will apologize that there may not be as many pictures in this series but it was our fifth vineyard of the day.

Hinterbrooks wine tasting bar is located in the showroom but one also has access to the casks of wine stored and one can just imagine what goodness is contained within.

There is something about a cask of wine that just sends shivers down my spine,

I fell in love with this table, heck I fall in love with anything wine related no lie.

The sommeliers at Hinterbrook are not only very knowledgeable they are very personable, making our tasting experience highly enjoyable.

There are nine reds available including three reserves, a 2010 Cabernet Franc Reserve, 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and a 2010 Merlot Reserve, each with their own unique notes.

The five whites, 2012 and 2013 Riesling (and you know how I love my Ontario Rieslings), Sauvignon Blanc, Franc Blanc and a white blend are all very fine wines. I could try and describe each to you but I do not think I could do that as well as the vineyard does on its site so I would encourage you to hop over and start imagining the light crisp flavours, the subtle hints of apple, the undertones of peach….

The also have a 2012 Cab Franc Ice wine,….

Our experience at Hinterbrook again did not disappoint, and we left with several bottles, I believe I may have counted 11 bottles in the cellar oops….
Hinterbrook does have an online shop but can only ship to Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba, the rest of you will just have to plan a trip to Niagara to visit this fine vineyard.

sounds like a great place to try wine. We have a lot of wine fest here in Germany. That I enjoy going to.
