Why I Took VIA Rail from Ottawa to Toronto for a Business Trip
When you think of business travel, flying is often the first option that comes to mind. But for my recent trip from Ottawa to Toronto to attend a networking event, I decided to take VIA Rail Economy Class instead.
It turned out to be one of the most relaxing and productive travel days I’ve had in a long time.
If you’re travelling between Ottawa and Toronto for work, a conference, or even a quick overnight stay, here’s why taking the train deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Starting the Day Stress-Free
One of the biggest advantages of travelling by train is how simple the journey begins.
Instead of arriving hours early, navigating airport security, or worrying about highway traffic, I arrived at Ottawa’s VIA Rail station, checked in, found my seat, and settled in within minutes.
There’s something refreshing about knowing your biggest decision for the next four and a half hours is whether to answer a few emails or simply enjoy the view.

Comfortable Economy Class Seating
Even in Economy Class, VIA Rail offers comfortable seating with generous legroom, reclining seats, and plenty of space to work or relax.
For longer trips like Ottawa to Toronto, having room to stretch out makes a noticeable difference.
Every seat includes access to power outlets, allowing me to keep my laptop and phone fully charged throughout the trip. With onboard Wi-Fi available on most trains, I was able to stay connected, review meeting notes, and answer emails before arriving.
Instead of losing half a day to travel, I actually gained productive time.

Watching Ontario Roll By
One of my favourite parts of train travel is slowing down enough to enjoy the scenery.
As the train travels through eastern Ontario, you’ll pass small towns, forests, farmland, rivers, and lakes that you simply don’t notice when driving along Highway 401.
It’s a peaceful reminder that sometimes the journey can be just as enjoyable as the destination.

Food and Drinks Onboard
Economy Class passengers have access to the onboard café service, offering a selection of snacks, sandwiches, hot meals on some departures, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
I grabbed a coffee and a light snack, then settled back into my seat to continue preparing for the event I was attending.
It’s convenient without having to pack a cooler or stop along the highway.

Making the Most of Travel Time
Business travel often feels like lost time.
On the train, that wasn’t the case.
During the trip I was able to:
- Review meeting agendas
- Organize notes
- Answer emails
- Edit a few photos
- Plan upcoming content
- Relax before a full day of networking
Because I wasn’t focused on driving, every minute became useful.

Arriving in the Heart of Toronto
One of the biggest benefits of VIA Rail is arriving directly at Union Station, right in downtown Toronto.
From there it’s easy to walk, take public transit, or catch a quick rideshare to hotels, office towers, restaurants, and meeting venues.
Whether you’re attending meetings in the Financial District, exploring the Entertainment District, or staying nearby, arriving downtown saves both time and money compared to flying into Pearson Airport.
Why Economy Class Was the Right Choice
For this particular trip, Economy Class provided everything I needed.
The seats were comfortable, the train was quiet, and I had reliable access to power and Wi-Fi throughout much of the journey. It was an affordable option that still allowed me to work, relax, and arrive refreshed.
If your schedule doesn’t require the added amenities of Business Class, Economy is an excellent value.

Tips for Travelling Ottawa to Toronto by Train
A few things made my trip even smoother:
- Book your ticket in advance for the best fares.
- Download any important files before boarding in case Wi-Fi slows in rural areas.
- Bring headphones if you’re planning to work or watch videos.
- Pack a reusable water bottle and grab a coffee from the café car.
- Choose a window seat if you enjoy watching the scenery.
Is VIA Rail Worth It for Business Travel?
Absolutely.
For meetings, conferences, media events, or even a quick overnight business trip, VIA Rail offers a comfortable and efficient alternative to driving or flying.
You avoid traffic, skip airport security, arrive downtown, and gain several hours of productive work time along the way.
For me, that combination makes the train one of the smartest ways to travel between Ottawa and Toronto.

Final Thoughts
My trip to Toronto proved that getting there doesn’t have to be the most stressful part of the day.
VIA Rail Economy Class offered a comfortable seat, the chance to work while travelling, beautiful Ontario scenery, and a relaxed arrival in the heart of downtown. By the time I stepped off the train at Union Station, I felt prepared, refreshed, and ready for the meetings ahead.
Whether you’re travelling for work or planning a city escape, taking the train is an experience that’s worth considering. Sometimes the journey really is part of the adventure.
