Today I am going totally off script for my Blog. A Labour of Life has never dealt with Politics, Religion nor my Union Beliefs but today that changes. No I am not going political or religious but certain things are bringing out my Union Views. Today I am #RedforEd or actually Monday I was.
What is #RedforEd
“When we think about the promise of education today, we see the future leaders of our nation and the qualified educators who reach, teach and inspire them. We see classrooms with modern tools that help students prepare to make an impact on the world. We see students getting the support they need to thrive and educators having the support they need to serve.
We see progress and hope.
Today, we also see budgets being cut, overcrowded classrooms and outdated materials. We see educators working around the clock to make a difference in the lives of their students and standing up to lawmakers to ask for better pay and school funding. We’re raising our voices together for our students, for our schools and for ourselves as educators.
That’s why we’re wearing Red for Ed.” NEA Today
My Connection to #RedforED
Carly’s Post about #RedforEd
In 15 years of working in Los Angeles schools……I’ve taught over 1,000 students (between classroom, intervention programs, summer school and after school programs) and all but a handful live below the poverty line.
So why am I striking?? I’m standing up for THEM. My students who have taught me oh so much more than I could ever teach them. They’ve taught me to be a better mother, a better friend, and to be a better human. They’ve taught me to recognize the blessings in my life, and they’ve taught me to appreciate so many things that we often take for granted. They’re given me purpose. And their needs are not being met.
In communities where most students receive medical care solely from clinics, school nurses are the only consistent health care they receive. In schools where many students experience trauma, school counselors are needed to support the students and to give teachers guidance and direction.
Most teachers by nature are helpers, people pleasers, and conflict avoiding people. So rest assured, this is extremely difficult for all of us. In fact, the idea of standing outside my school breaks my heart. But I believe that we have a duty to stand up for our students, especially those who most of society ignores. ALL CHILDREN deserve the very best care. .
Tell me about a teacher who changed your life in the comments. Let’s celebrate what teachers do each and every day for ALL our children. #utlastrong #teachersofinstagram#redfored
This is the IRL Me
So rule breaking is my motto today. It was the focus of our training today in how to move the Union Forward and it’s on my mind tonight. If Carly can be strong enough to lay it out on Instagram then I can be real on the Blog. Today I wear my Union Pride on my sleeve and on my chest. I stood up and wore #redforEd and will continue to support them anyway I can.
To be totally crass and out of sinc with the seriousness of my post, ho about the perfect tee for the day. Ironically I had ordered this on line from Giant Tiger and it arrived last week. Well As soon as I saw the hashtag I knew what I was wearing on Monday.
I paired the Simon Chang Pop Tee with the Ribbon Tie Pants also from GT and a Boyfriend Cardi from Old Navy. FYI my desert boots are from Payless and are over twenty years old.
