Happy Monday and I had an amazing weekend with a bit of a shadow hanging over me. The Orleans Craft Beer Festival was happening and I opted for what I call Beer Fashion to celebrate a weekend of beer. Sadly I had a shadow hanging over me all weekend with concerns about Blog Plagiarism.
Blog Plagiarism and Being Careful
It’s a bit of a sad story but one I really think I should share. On Friday I received a cease and desist email from a blogger I knew and respected. Well you can imagine my feelings of dismay upon reading an email telling me something on my blog was not mine. It was not a nasty email by any means but one that told me my new About Page was in fact a rip off of their’s. Honestly my stomach just dropped, I did not even know how to process this. I mean I had heard stories about blog rip offs and stolen ideas but this was now about me.
Due diligence made me check out the two pages and low and behold I say many, many similarities. I had contracted a new About me page back in March, as well as a PR Page. These were two things everyone urged me to really pay attention to. Well lesson learned, stick to writing all my stuff always.
Sadly this had happened to me in reverse years ago. When I first started blogging a woman wrote to me and told me someone had copied my blog, word for word, picture for picture. A simple complaint to google had it taken down but it still felt weird. Why would someone want to use all my stuff, especially back in 2014.
Write for yourself
Funny thing is I never accept other writers on my blog. A Labour of Life is my story and my life. So once I take the easy way out and accept a little help. Arggg, the person did confess to what she characterized as “influenced by”. She felt “inspired” by some of the blogs I shared on my Blog List and thought creatively changing the text was acceptable. Well sorry folks, it’s plagiarism plain and simple. I immediately took down the page and reverted to my original. Caching issues I am experiencing was causing it to not show properly so for now I have removed the offending page.
I will move towards creating my own About Me only after I feel re-assured that it is my words, my thoughts and my page. I will sacrifice a google re-direct to make sure I have done the right thing.
My advise to you, make sure anyone you use you trust. Ask questions and do your research.
Moving Past Plagiarism
I am hoping I can move past this awful experience. Trusting that an error on my part that I have worked hard to rectify will not forever damage a working relationship. It’s a tough lesson folks so stay alert and stay on top of everything.
Beer Fashion and Gingham Pants
Trying to put a bad experience behind me I did have a fun weekend at the Orlean’s Craft Beer Fest. Kent and I purchased a weekend pass and I also was invited to attend by the Festival. They did an amazing job again this year. Moving to a Thursday to Saturday schedule was brilliant. It gives everyone including Organizers, vendors and Volunteers a chance to rest up on Sunday. Hopefully you were following my Inst Stories on the weekend and staying up to date on all the great beer,
On Thursday Evening I opted for what I call Beer Fashion. Wearing my Stray Dog Brewing Tank with fun gingham pants. Adding bright pink converse and a fun Cardi completed the look. It was slightly cool evening but I was comfortable, warm and still stylish. Have you ever tried beer fashion? I may have a few more Beer Fashion items to share. Plus an update on the 2018 Festival
